Gathered Around the Table

For most of our marriage, my husband and I have invited someone from church to join us around the table after church on Sunday. For the last several years, we have mostly fed college students. Early in our marriage, we also fed college students, since we lived in a college town this seemed to be the greater need.

Last Sunday, we were blessed that one of "our kids" who graduated a few years ago was in town for Homecoming. We attended his wedding earlier this summer, and he and his new bride were at second service at Highland. They had no plans for lunch, so even though we had not cooked, we invited them to come by the house and eat with us. My husband made a quick trip to United and picked up some fried chicken, and I opened a couple of cans of vegetables. We didn't have a lot of time, since we were scheduled to attend the Homecoming musical at 2:00 p.m., and it was almost 1:00 p.m. by the time we got home. But the few minutes we did have together were precious. We got to catch up on what had been happening in their lives. Even got in a few minutes of political discussion, which is something Nic always loved to do. I think the fact that his wife is a public school teacher may be changing some of his views on the way the Texas government is being run! It was a great reunion.

At the end of our worship today, the closing song was "Great is Thy Faithfulness." It brought back special memories of a dear friend who sat with us at church, and who had sat at our table and acted as a grandfather to our daughter. Even though he has been gone from our presence many years, the memory was enough to bring tears to her eyes.

Today, we had some more kids over. One is almost family, as his dad and my best friend are first cousins. I got to attend his family reunion earlier this summer, although he did not get to be there. We also were blessed by the presence of a member of my Bible class. He lives at the Salvation Army and comes from a much different background than our kids. But they treated him with dignity and kindness. I expected no less and was really proud of them. One of the college guys was new to us, but our daughter knew him. And, we had a second grader who has been adopted into her family not so very long ago, and has become special friends with my family. It was an eclectic collection of persons and personalities, all bound by the love of the Lord. It was a great meal.

I love the blessings we have been given through the persons who have gathered around our table.

God's Family

We’re part of the family that’s been born again
Part of the family whose love knows no end
For Jesus has saved us and made us His own
Now we’re part of the family that’s on its way home.

(chorus)
And sometimes we laugh together, sometimes we cry
Sometimes we share together, heartaches and sighs
Sometimes we dream together, of how it will be
When we all get to heaven, God’s family.

When a brother meets sorrow, we all feel his grief
When he’s passed through the valley, we all feel relief
Together in sunshine, together in rain
Together in victory, in His precious name.

(chorus)

And though some go before us, we’ll all meet again
Just inside the city as we enter in
There’ll be no ore parting, with Jesus we’ll be
Together forever, God’s family.

(chorus)
